After a cavity has been removed, a filling is used as a replacement material to restore the affected area. The requirements for filling materials are high. They must have the ability to survive in a wet environment, stay intact for the life of the tooth, and be safe for the patient. The material selected must also hold together despite the strong forces of chewing.

Composite Resin

Composite resin is filling material that is the same color as the tooth. This is the most aesthetically pleasing option for a filling. Composite resin is ideal for repairing chipped or cracked teeth, replacing a cavity, correcting dental discoloration, or changing the shape of a tooth.

Amalgam

Amalgam is another filling option used to repair teeth or replace a cavity. This is also a durable and safe option. Because of its silver color, it is not used on front teeth where a tooth colored filling would achieve a better cosmetic result.
